Academic Advising

Mesabi Range Community and Technical College advising services are designed to help students be successful in attaining their educational goals. Advising services are available on both the Virginia and Eveleth campuses. Advising services include:

The advising staff on each campus is available for students on a daily basis between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. We encourage you to stop in and see us with any questions that you may have! If we cannot answer your question we will direct you to someone who can!

Academic Advising / Semester Scheduling

Academic advisors work with students to develop an academic schedule each term to meet the student's transfer and/or career needs. Academic advisors complete informal academic evaluations each term to assist students in meeting their goals through the proper selection of courses. Students are required to meet with an academic advisor each semester to review progress toward their academic goals, discuss appropriate courses and receive log in information for online registration.

Program Planning

Technical programs have specific academic plans that student follow each semester. These plans are governed by industry standards and regulations to ensure students are receiving the most up-to-date and relevant technical education possible. The Eveleth campus advising staff works with technical program students to monitor progress toward program completion.

Transfer Advising

Students enrolled in transfer programs on either campus are given assistance in selecting schools and programs that best meet their academic/career needs. The advising staff meets with students and connects them to information and transfer specialists at four-year institutions. Assistance with applying to four-year institutions is available to all students. One of the goals of the academic advising staff is to make the transfer process as clean and easy as possible.

Career Advising/Placement Services

Career materials are available through the career center on the Virginia Campus. Technical programs at the Eveleth campus work with the Placement Coordinator to find appropriate positions in their career field. Advisors work with students to explore possible career interests through the use of assessment tools such as Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Campbell Interest and Skills Inventory (CISS), and online assessments.

Assessment Testing

The academic advising staff coordinates the CPT assessment sessions for all new incoming students. This placement test is mandatory at Mesabi Range Community and Technical College. Students assess in math, reading and English and are placed in courses that are appropriate for their assessed skill level. These course placements are mandatory. Students who place into refresher courses must complete them within the first 32 credits of their coursework. A grade of C or better is required to move to the next level. These courses will not be counted toward graduation credits. A student has the right to retest in any or all subject areas once each academic year.

Student Support Services Program

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded grant program that works with low income, first generation students, and students with disabilities. Funded as part of the programming, SSS serves approximately 200 students on the Virginia campus. The Mesabi Range program is part of a five campus regional SSS grant. The goal of the program is to assist participants in completing their program of study at Mesabi Range and transfer on to complete a four-year (bachelor) degree. Services include assigned advisors, tuition-free courses and workshops, social and cultural activities, academic programming geared toward building success, and regional SSS activities among the five campuses. All activities associated with the SSS program are FREE!
