Due to budget reduction measures, the MN State Grant now has a deadline. In order to qualify for a MN State Grant, the student's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be received by the Federal Processor no later than 30 days after the start of the term. Students whose FAFSA's are received after that date by the Federal Processor will be ineligible for MN State Grants.
Step 1 You will need a PIN number to use as your electronic signature. If you have already filed a FAFSA, you should have already received a PIN number. If you have misplaced your PIN or need to apply for a PIN go to www.pin.ed.gov. Parents may also apply for a PIN. Your PIN number is unique to you and may be used as an electronic signature for FAFSA's (a new FAFSA must be filed for each school year). The PIN can also be used as an electronic signature for Stafford Loans for students who use the on-line Stafford Loan Application.
Step 2 Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can obtain a FAFSA packet from a high school counselor or contact Mesabi Range directly and we'll be happy to send one to you. The FAFSA is also available on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. By completing FAFSA on the web and entering Mesabi's Code 004009, your application will be processed in approximately 2 weeks. A paper FAFSA sent in the mail takes approximately 4 weeks to process. Some types of financial aid are given on a first come, first serve basis.
Step 3 After your FAFSA has been processed through the Federal Processor, you will receive a SAR (Student Aid Report). Please review the SAR for accuracy. The SAR will give you an Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC determines the types of financial aid that you are eligible for.
Step 4 Mesabi will receive an Institutional record of your SAR. We will contact you with a request for any additional forms that we may need to complete your financial aid application.
Step 5 After all the necessary documents have been turned it, you will receive an AWARD LETTER. Your award letter will have information on which grants you are eligible for along with work study and loan eligibility.
Step 6 If you are interested in taking out a LOAN, you must submit a separate loan application. All loan applications are available on the website at www.mr.mnscu.edu/FA/financialaid.html.
Step 7 If you are interested in WORK STUDY, see the Financial Aid office for a work study packet. A listing of available jobs is on the website.
